Erma Elizabeth Kainz, 83, of Volga, Iowa, died Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa. Erma was born on September 9, 1933, to Rudy and Dorothy (Orr) Kainz in Elkader, Iowa.She graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1950 and then attended Mankato State College in Mankato, Minnesota.

After college, Erma returned to Elkader to work for the Clayton County Register. She was united in marriage to Al Schaub in Tomah, Wisconsin in 1952, to this union three children were born, David, Daniel and Douglas.  They later divorced in 1958.  She then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was united in marriage with Howard Weldon Sr., to this union one child was born, Howard Weldon Jr. They later divorced in 1964.  In 1970, Erma was united in marriage to Lawrence Fergino in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to this union one child was born, Antoinette Fergino. Erma, Lawrence and their family then moved to Alexander, Virginia in 1971.  She divorced in 1974.  In 1978, she moved to Cedar Rapids to open a restaurant named “First Step” that she owned and operated until 1980, when she worked for St. Mary’s for a year before moving to Washington D.C. While in D.C. she managed restaurants for a few years until she moved to Tampa, Florida where she worked for the Hillsborough County in the human resource department for over 15 years. After her retirement in 1996, she moved to Elkader, Iowa. She loved cooking, baking, quilting and gardening. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family.   

Erma is survived by her four children, David Schaub of Volga, Iowa, Douglas Schaub of Orlando, Florida, Howard Weldon Jr, of Volga, Iowa and Antoinette Fergino of Tampa, Florida; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Iola (Dale) Peterson of Iowa City, Iowa, Marjorie (Glenn) Jensen of Marion, Iowa, Janet (Thomas) Luton of Bettendorf, Iowa, Judie (Richard) Herzog of Fairfield, Iowa, Carolyn (Jerome) Koopman of Garnavillo, Iowa, Micki (Bob) Stoffel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Shirley (Charles) Peterman of Elkader, Iowa; two brothers, Don Orr of Bagley, Wisconsin and Robert (Mary) Kainz of Austin, Texas and one ex-husband, Lawrence Fergino of New Port Richie, Florida.   

Erma was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Schaub, two ex-husbands, Al Schaub and Howard Weldon Sr. and her parents, Rudy and Dorothy Kainz.

There will be an inurnment at a later date in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.
Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elkader, Iowa is helping the family with arrangements.
