A Guttenberg teenager has died following a one-car rollover accident on Monday, June 12, west of Guttenberg. Emma Hefel, 16, died Thursday, June 15, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

She was one of three teens injured in the accident that took place at approximately 4 p.m. a week ago Monday on Garber Road, just west of 310th Street. 

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, driven by Amber Garlow of Holy Cross, was headed west when the car entered the south ditch, rolled and came to rest on its top in a field before becoming engulfed in flames. 

A passenger, Lillian Horstman, 15, of Guttenberg had to be extricated from the vehicle. All three passengers were taken by Guttenberg EMS to Guttenberg Municipal Hospital; Hefel and Horstman were subsequently airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals. 

Also assisting at the scene were the Iowa State Patrol, Guttenberg Fire Department, Guttenberg Police Department, Clayton County Sheriff, Garnavillo Fire Department, Garnavillo EMS and Elkader EMS.
