River Valley blanks Prairie du Chien gridders

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks faced off against conference rival River Valley Blackhawks Friday night. The game was Prairie du Chien’s Senior Night, celebrating the high school careers of the senior football players and cheerleaders.

On Friday the 13th, bad luck seemingly struck the Blackhawks (7-2, 3-2), as they were unable to move the ball consistently against River Valley’s (5-4, 3-2) strong and physical defensive line.

RV used a strong running game to jump out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Prairie du Chien 40-0 to end 2017 conference play.

Prairie du Chien’s offense performed atypically in the first half, managing only 10 net offensive yards on 22 plays before halftime. River Valley’s experienced defense forced 3 punts and intercepted 2 passes in the first half. Valley’s offense used a dominating run game to move the ball and scored all 40 points before halftime. Scoring for the River Valley Blackhawks were Shane Liegel and Justin Yanke on runs of 1, 26, 11, 12, 1 and 8 yards.

Prairie’s Drake Coleman and Chris Check each blocked 1 extra point in the half.

With a 40-point lead, River Valley was granted a running clock for the second half.

Because of the nonstop clock, each team only possessed the ball twice in the second half. Both teams forced one 3-and-out and one turnover on downs following long drives. Neither team would punch in a score, and River Valley clinched a playoff spot with an assertive 40-0 win in Week 9.

Gavin Gillitzer led the Blackhawks in rushing, with 2 carries for 32 yards. Gillitzer was 7 for 16 in the air for 63 yards and 2 INTs. Drake Coleman led the receivers with 5 receptions for 51 yards. Stephen Ronnfeldt led the Hawks’ defense with 14 tackles in the game.

Prairie du Chien’s 7-2, 3-2 was enough to earn third place in the SWC. The Hawks drew a #4 seed at the seeding meeting and will host New Glarus/Monticello on Friday night to begin the 2017 WIAA Division 5 Tournament. Come cheer on your Blackhawks as they look for their first playoff win since 2009! Game time is 7 p.m.
