The Overland Group hasn’t given up on bringing a Dollar General store to Monona.

The Monona Council, at its Oct. 16 meeting, considered a request by the group for voluntary annexation of land at the intersection of Highway 18/52 and 125th Street, for construction of a Dollar General store.

The parcel is currently privately owned.

“Overland intends to purchase it, but they don’t own it yet,” said city administrator Dan Canton.

The council held off on moving forward with the request, opting to first speak with the current property owner, to find out if they too might be interested in voluntary annexation into the city.

Next month, if the council decides to move ahead, Canton said the city will publish a notice citing their intent to annex the property. The council then must wait two weeks before taking action.

If everything proceeds, Canton said zoning for the property must also be determined, as it’s currently part of the county. The planning and zoning commission would examine the matter first and hold a public hearing and make a recommendation to the council. The council would then also hold a public hearing before making a decision.
