The city of Marquette will soon have new street banners. The city council approved the purchase of 24 banners, at a cost of $2,352, at its Jan. 16 meeting.

The Marquette Action Club has agreed to pay for half the cost of the banners, which will be sepia-toned and feature over half a dozen images related to Marquette, like the railroad, wine, fishing and antiques.

Fireworks cost goes up

The council approved spending $9,975 for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks display. That’s a 5 percent increase ($475) from last year, said mayor Steve Weipert.

“We either pay that or they shoot off less fireworks,” he told the council.

Depot expansion project is moving forward

Councilwoman Pam Brodie-Fitzgerald said specs have been drawn up for an expansion to the Depot Museum and Information Center. She asked the council to approve sending out requests for proposals for the project, a request the council unanimously OK’d.

Brodie-Fitzgerald to attend Legislative Day

The council gave Brodie-Fitzgerald the go-ahead to attend Legislative Day at the state capitol on Feb. 7. Brodie-Fitzgerald said she plans to attend some budget workshops and speak with legislators at the event. Some of the topics she hopes to address include county roads, Luster Heights and maintenance of the Marquette-Joliet Bridge.
