Training, innovative equipment help deputies keep Crawford County safe

By Ted Pennekamp

On a recent fall day, the patrol of southern Crawford County by Sheriff’s Department Deputy Shawn Lenzendorf is “routine,” but as Lenzendorf says, “You never know what you’re gonna run into on any given day. You might be doing traffic patrol, or you might be chasing cattle all day.”

Operation Santa provides toys, necessities and food for families in need

The holidays are just around the corner. The Prairie du Chien Jaycees elves are once again busy making preparations for their annual Operation Santa program. Last season, the Jaycees assisted over 150 Crawford County families in need.

Operation Santa provides families with toys (or Chamber bucks) for each child and a toothbrush, blanket, hat, mittens, scarf and either a coat or some new clothing. Each family also receives fresh apples and oranges, butter and free coupons for bread, milk and a ham. These items are free to families in need and help make the holidays a little brighter for them.

Operation Santa is only possible because of the generous donations the Jaycees receive from the community. This year, all non-perishable food collected will go directly to the food pantry for the families to pick up there during their monthly distribution.

Semi hauling hogs crashes on Hwy. 133, some pigs killed

On Nov. 2 at 9:55 a.m., Richard Kipp, 52, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, was westbound on Highway 133 four-tenths of a mile east of County K in Woodman Township operating a 2004 Freightliner tractor trailer loaded with 150 hogs all weighing approximately 270 pounds.

While negotiating a sharp curve the tractor trailer struck the guardrail and the trailer detached from the tractor. The trailer went through the guardrail and overturned on a steep embankment above the Wisconsin River.

Several of the pigs were ejected from the trailer and some were trapped inside. The Sheriff’s Office contacted Fennimore Livestock to corral the loose pigs as well as free the trapped pigs. Several pigs died from the crash.
