Joyce Mikkelson

Joyce Mikkelson, 91, passed peacefully from this life Friday, July 20. 

The eldest of nine children, Joyce was born April 1, 1927, in Prairie du Chien, to Lawrence and Genevieve LaPointe. She left school early to help support the family during the Great Depression. On Aug. 19, 1945, she married Melenor Mikkelson, and together they raised four children. She died one month shy of their seventy-third anniversary.

Richard Allen Ellefson

Richard Allen Ellefson, 68, of Lansing, Iowa, died suddenly Wednesday, July 18, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. 

Rich was born on Jan. 25, 1950, to Junice (Ellefson) Bolsinger in Waukon, Iowa. He attended school in Lansing and graduated from Kee High in 1968. On Dec. 12, 1980, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Smith. To this union two sons were born. The couple later divorced.

Rich enjoyed going out for breakfast at Nutmeg’s, going out to eat at Milty’s, having a few beers at the OP, and playing cards. Rich also liked hunting deer and hunting turkeys. Rich was very kind hearted and loved helping people and was a “fixture” of Lansing. Rich was employed at Northern Engraving for numerous years until the plant closed.

Steven Schreiner, Soldiers Grove, 67, passed away Sunday, July 15. 

He is survived by his sons Scott (Wendi), Steve (Marie) and Matt; seven grandchildren; five sisters; three brothers; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Armella (Nee: Kleiber); and brothers Edward, John and Richard.

Clara M. Weber Hess Tobin, 88, of Worthington, passed away Thursday, July 19, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m., Monday, July 23, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Worthington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 23, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Worthington with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate. Kramer Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Debbie M. Kirschbaum Smith

Debbie M. Kirschbaum Smith, 60, of Cottage Grove, formerly of Potosi, passed away Thursday, July 12. 

She was born July 18, 1957, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Donald P. and Bernadine (Voss) Kirschbaum. Debbie graduated from Potosi High School in 1976, and continued her education throughout her career as a Clinical Research Coordinator. She always had health problems, but never dwelled on them.

Randy J. Gabel, Sr.

Randy J. Gabel, Sr., 74, of Potosi, passed away on Monday, July 16, at his home surrounded by his loving family. 

He was born on July 9, 1944, in Cuba City, the son of Clarence and Mae (Laughlin) Gabel. Randy graduated from Potosi High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965, and served his country during Vietnam. Randy was honorably discharged in 1967 and resided in Illinois. On Jan. 16, 1971, he was united in marriage to Terese “Terri” Frye, in Dubuque, Iowa. Randy was employed at Wisconsin Power and Light in 1975 and retired in 2010 after 35 years of employment.

Kim M. Lichtfuss

Kim M. Lichtfuss, 61, of Wauzeka, passed away Wednesday, July 11, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. 

She was born June 21, 1957, in Beloit, the daughter of Donald and Gloria (Spooner) Carlson. Kim worked as an EMT and bartended in the Beloit area for several years before moving to this area where she worked at 3M company in Prairie du Chien for a while. She was always creative and crafty and was interested in digital scrapbooking. She became a designer and eventually the owner of an online scrapbooking store called “The Digichick.” 

Kim was passionate about the outdoors whether she was working in her garden, planting flowers around the yard, or just enjoying nature in general. She liked to read books, watch movies and enjoyed cooking food and sometimes made up her own special recipes.

Richard A. Garside

Richard A. Garside, 76, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, in his home while under the care of Agrace Hospice Care.

Dick was delivered at home by a neighbor on May 27, 1942. He was one of five children born to Lulu Belle (Poston) Garside and Eldridge Garside in the town of Patch Grove.

Donald P. Cooley

Donald P. Cooley, 77, of Bagley, passed away on Sunday, July 8, at his home on the farm in Bagley with his loving wife Carol by his side. 

He was born on July 23, 1940, in Lancaster, to Allen and Helen (Meier) Cooley, the second oldest of four children. Don grew up milking cows on the family farm and working at the Hazelton Cheese factory. He enlisted in the Army and served in the National Guard for six years. 

In 1962, he married Marcia Moore and had two daughters, Angela and Christine. Marcia tragically died in a fire in 1973. Then, in 1978 Donald married Carol Achenbach and together they had a son Stuart and he became a father to John and Alan Achenbach.
